Longmead Branch Sponsored Steam-up For Evelina Hospital
Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth 2nd’s Diamond Jubilee
Monday 4th June 2012

As part of the Jubilee Celebrations it was decided that the Longmead Branch Garden Railway in Tonbridge, would host a Sponsored Steam up to raise funds for the Evelina Hospital, part of the St. Thomas Hospital complex in London, where my Great Nephew Aidan is being treated for an as yet undiagnosed illness. The aim of the day was to have a locomotive/train running on the line for the whole of twelve hours. This was accomplished with the assistance of visiting locomotives working alongside locomotives based on the Longmead Branch, and the generosity of sponsors was much appreciated.
The statistics make for good reading.
Four locomotives from the Longmead Fleet and eight visiting locomotives, ran in half hour slots, for a total of twelve hours from 8am – 8 pm, covering at total distance of 5.68 real miles, raising a total, (so far), of £143. Some donations are still being made.

The signal box at Longmead was open for a total of 13.5 hours, from 7.30 am – 9 pm, and the signal box at North Tonbridge was also manned for a short time.

May 2012 New Signalling system planned

A replacement signalling system was sourced at Merstham Model Show which includes much brighter LEDs to offer far greater daylight visibility, especially for the distant signals. Work is now underway to replace the existing 12v system.

Saturday 19th May 2012 Wheldon Wagon comes to Longmead

Some time ago in 2006 a replica of a wagon originally built by the late Jack Wheldon started a global journey in British Columbia in Canada. It has visited garden railways in Canada, America & even Hawaii. It has now reached British soil and found its way to Longmead on a detour from its Welsh leg of the journey. It broke from the steam hauled tradition and travelled behind the Locomotion Metrovic 'Smoke Hill' - which seemed fitting for the largely electrified Southern Region. It did, however, pose behind Esther and with Ant for photographs. For details of the Wheldon Wagon's journey so far click HERE
